Although we all know what a great content management system Joomla is, sometimes situations call for the link not to be visible in your website footer. To remove this from the default (1.0.x) template, you need to browse via ftp or otherwise to the file includes/version.php.

Open it with your favourite editor, find the $URL line and change it to your liking. If you want nothing at all leave the line as $URL = '' (2 apostrophes). Do not remove the whole line because you might break your template.

This applies to the default template (rhuk_solarflare_ii). Other templates are likely to not use the URL and use their own links. You would have to use some kind of software on your local installation which looks within text files, and search for the text you want to change. Once you find it, you can change it to suit your needs.

Joomla CSS Drop Down Menu Tutorial

Posted In: . By photo malang

Want a lean CSS drop down menu in Joomla? Meet the suckerfish!

OK, if you have read my SEO guide, you might have noticed I am biased a little against flash and JavaScript. I like to emphasize W3C valid code and lean pages, neither of which is helped by these two approaches. “But what about menus?” I hear you ask, don’t they need one of these two?
Well, there are a number of techniques you can use with CSS to get more visually attractive menus, all of them use unordered lists (bulleted lists to you and me) to create the menu. Let’s look at a few, we’ll start with a drop down menu.

A few people (OK, one) wondered how I got Joomla to have a drop down menu on a recent site;

www.thrutheturnstiles.co.uk

The menu is what has been coined “suckerfish” (don’t ask me why), its pure CSS, very lean, hack free and just as 12 lines of JavaScript to bail out Microdoze IE.

You can see a demo here:
www.htmldog.com/articles/suckerfish/dropdowns/example/

You can find guides to how the thing works at a couple of sites:
www.htmldog.com/articles/suckerfish/dropdowns
www.alistapart.com/articles/dropdowns

Now, you might have noticed that you need your menu outputted as a good clean list. Well it just so happens that there is a module out there to do this, and we’ll need it. Its called extended_menu, you can find it here:
de.siteof.de/detree/extended-menu.html

So, grab the module and install. Now let’s set it up. It’s easiest if you give it a menu and module class suffix. I used “mainnav” (you’ll see in the CSS below). A couple of other settings you will need:
Menu style: Tree List
Expand Menu: Yes

So put the menu where you want it, then to the CSS. This is a little tricky, it took me some trial and error to get the effects I wanted, but you can just skip that part and use mine J.

Last but not least you need to add
the JavaScript for IE into the head of the template index.php (or a js file),
it doesn’t like the :hover.

Hopefully, follow this and Bob’s your Uncle you should have clean valid drop downs for your menu. Enjoy!

Wrapper Tip - Joomla

Posted In: . By photo malang

What can I do with a wrapper? - While working on my first joomla project for a client, I ran into several things he needed that didn't quite fit into joomla as easily as I would have liked them to. For example, I needed a fanclub sign up form. At first I tried pasting in my source code for a form into a static content page. Then, I went back into the page to edit it and - whoa! it integrated itself into the admin gui. I can't explain how exactly this looked, but try pasting form html into a static page and you'll soon see it won't work.

Now, there are several mods and components out there that allow you to put in a form (facile form) but these seemed to have too many options to learn in order to make it happen. Perhaps it's just me being lazy or dumb (take your pick), but I did'nt have the time to figure out these mods. What I ended up doing that was quick and easy, create your own form.html page outside your joomla, on your server, and just enter the path to your form.html in the wrapper. Make sure that your form.htm includes the css file for your template so the look is consistent with the rest of your site.

The wrapper also came in handy for including a photo gallery, and a paypal shop that my client already had and wanted to use.

So, if you can't seem to find that perfect module or component for your site, create it in html and wrap it up.
